They resonate with historical references,revealing the social and cultural significance of what has often been simply perceived as 'women's work'.'Quilts 1700-1945' explores the personal and social histories embeddedin both highly decorative and homemade bed covers that reveal the maker's complex engagement with the wider world. Since the beginning of cinema, filmmakers have been driven to create monstrous characters, drawing on folklore and literature for inspiration. From the 1930s, Dracula embodied the lust and violence in society, while Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and King Kong, offered cautionary tales of science gone mad, and expressed fears of evolutionary theory and of the outsider.
