Travel guide Victoria for Family Friendly

A trip to Maldon
By Kylie Jane Degeling

A trip to Maldon is a treat for any history buff. Listed as Australia’s ‘First Notable Town’ by The National Trust in 1966, this old gold mining town has beautifully preserved buildings dating back to the 19th century and a genuine steam train. At one time in history, the town had some of the world’s richest quartz reefs, with wealthy fortune-hunters flocking to the area where they built luxurious homes and businesses at the height of the boom. Today, the miners have gone, along with the quartz and gold – but in 2006 The National Trust referred to Maldon as “…the most intact historic streetscape in Victoria.” It is truly a picturesque preservation of Australian history.   Fans of Australian literature and movies will be intere... Walhalla, Gippsland, Victoria
By Kylie Jane Degeling

Sometimes, a person wants to escape the rat race and get back to the simple life. But not if you live in Walhalla! If you lived there, you probably wouldn’t encounter much traffic, as today there are only ten permanent residents! But it is this simplicity that makes Walhalla such a delightful destination to visit. Over a hundred years ago, thousands of gold miners and support businesses made this town a thriving community, but today only their ghosts remain.   Ghosts? Well – friendly ghosts anyway. If you fancy some intrigue, a local favourite tour is the Walhalla Ghost Tour where you will hear eerie stories about the characters that once roamed the town (and never left…).    Things to do: If the idea of a ghost tour gives you the chills, conside... Ride into the sunset – horse riding on holidays!
Australia
By Kylie Jane Degeling

If you’ve ever watched the classic Aussie movie The Man From Snowy River, you may have found yourself longing to grab a horse and head out on an equine adventure.  When we dig deeper into Australia’s great movie vault, we discover many films featuring horse riding throughout the country. While for many films, this is logical given they are period pieces, the reality of our vast, ever-changing landscapes simply make horse riding a fun thing to do in this country. This is why, whether you are a complete novice or ride horses on a regular basis, you might want to consider including a ride into the sunset on your next holiday break.  New to horse riding? Before you book yourself on a week-long horse riding excursion in the Snowy Mountains, it’s importan... Read more

Waeco Products
Australia
By Rachel Power

Undertaking a four month journey around Australia with two young girls requires careful planning and preparation. Our WAECO Products have made our camping life much more enjoyable. CoolFreeze CF-80 The most essential item is our CF-80 fridge/freezer. The biggest benefit of the CF-80 is the ability to combine a fridge and freezer in one unit. Having a freezer has enabled us to stock up on meat and other frozen products on special saving us a great deal of money. With the children, it has also meant we can carry food items that can be prepared quickly to satisfy hungry tummies.   The large 80 litre capacity has enabled us to carry a huge range of foods and drinks such as frozen meat, ice creams, ice cubes, juice, margarine, deli meats, left-overs, beer and wine, all at appropriate t... Central Coast audio tour – Talk’N Tours
By Lisa Monk

If you have ever had a guided tour that was less than informative, moved too fast or too slow, or just didn’t have the sort of information you were looking for, then Talk’N Tours may be the answer for you.   There is a series of tours in podcast format, allowing you to go at your own pace, stop, start and rewind at will. The company provides tours in and around Sydney and Melbourne at this point, with more to come.   I took the ‘Central Coast Day Tour’ from Sydney and found it to be an interesting and informative way to learn more about the areas mentioned. The tour leaves from Wynyard bus stand and has bus, ferry and rail legs.   At all points there is something new to be learned and as a Sydney local and frequent visitor to the areas covered i... Australia
By Nicole Corson

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-H Seashell Review Reviewed 4-18th November 2009   The Asus Eee PC 1005HA-H Seashell is the perfect little laptop to take on your next family holiday. It is small, lightweight, yet still able to complete all of the holiday tasks while you are away.   The Eee PC is great for viewing those holiday snaps at the end of the day with the 10.1" LED screen and MMC/SD (SDHC) card reader (the memory card from your camera). You can delete the ones the kids took of the ground and the back of each other's heads (!) and transfer the rest onto the 250GB hard drive (yes, that'll hold a lot of photos) ready for the next day's adventures. The long battery life of this fantastic netbook is also a winner while on holidays. As I write, the battery is at 96% capacity wit... Read more

Smart Ass
Australia
By Penny Parsons

This is a travel version of the popular Smart Ass board game and is perfect for taking on car trips to keep the kids happy. It comes in a colourful and durable tin and has 200 cards, split between the four categories… Who am I, What am I, Where am I and Smart Ass. We took the game on a teambuilding weekend and it was the perfect way to relax after dinner on the first night and get everyone talking and laughing. The beauty of this version is the compact size and as there is no game board, you don’t even need a table to play. The winner is the first person to collect 4 cards. It is easy to play – one person reads out the questions (perfect for kids, who probably won’t know the majority of the answers) and the other members of the group call out their answer. If...
