Three artists look very closely at the natural environment in an exhibition of paintings, photography and ceramics.
Jill Edwards, Robin Roberts and Bronwyn Theobald, each using different media, have investigated detail in various aspects of nature, rather than taking the big picture.
Jill Edwards has recorded her immediate landscape of the Huon valley, developing in great detail some of its components. She is exploring the idea that “part of the whole is, in fact, a whole in itself.” Her practice, since she was seven, of keeping sketch books recording her environment, forms the basis of these watercolours.
The intricacy of pattern, texture and colours in nature inspire Robin Roberts, both in his work in ceramics and photography. He would like his developing interest in close-up detail to allow the viewer to develop a passion for what we can all see, and perhaps become even more conscious of the need to preserve our natural environment.
Bronwyn Theobald explores the detailed use of insects as metaphors in the poems of Plath, Shelley etc.. Her emphasis is on cicadas, beetles, grasshoppers and other insects which appear (and disappear) on sets of plates and bowls as linocut and screenprinted images, together with fragments of text from the literature that inspired them.
