Review - Kalili Beach House

Kalili Beach House
69 Farrell Road, Bulli, Illawarra region
New South Wales

A parent’s retreat that is great for families too!

This lovely beach house is a real escape… with a parent’s retreat upstairs, spa bath, large deck and all the attractions of Bulli, there is something to keep the whole family happy.

Overall rating?
Excellent

What makes Kalili Beach House different?
It is a gorgeous self-contained cottage with plenty of parking (for your boat as well) and easy access to the front door to make unloading the car a breeze.  Although the property is only 30 minutes from Sydney’s southern suburbs, you will feel miles away from the details of everyday life.  The large deck offers great views and makes it easy to relax and take on a “holiday” mentality, even if you can only stay a couple of days.

Accommodation overview
Kalili Beach House has two bedrooms downstairs, one with a queen bed and the other has two singles.  The parent’s retreat upstairs has a king bed, ensuite bathroom and its own deck – complete with telescope to make the most of the views.  All bedrooms have wardrobe-style storage and the downstairs bedrooms have bedside tables.

Facilities overview
The cottage has a lovely feel, and is art deco style with retro furnishings.  The open plan kitchen has large windows and a dining area.  The family room manages to cover all bases, with a piano, books, games, toys and TV/DVD.  The downstairs bathroom has a spa bath, and aside from the private deck off the parent’s retreat, there is a large downstairs deck with great views of Bulli and the Illawarra escarpment.  The cottage also has a BBQ to make the most of the outdoors.

The kitchen has all you need – including a dishwasher to make it a holiday for everyone; and there is well-equipped laundry.  There is a high chair (a cot is available on request), stair guard, plastic plates etc for the kids and some toys and books.

Location
From Sydney take the Southern Freeway to Wollongong, turn off at Bulli Pass and then turn right at the bottom.  You could leave the car behind and take the Illawarra line from Sydney, as the Kalili Beach House is only a 15 min walk from the station (so long as you don’t have too much to carry!).

Suitable for children?
 Yes

Suitable for pets?
No

Wheelchair access?
Limited, due to a small lip to the front door, shower and deck.  No wheelchair access to the parent’s retreat, backyard or laundry.

Perfect for?
Couples, families or a group of friends.  The beach and foreshore is an easy 15 min walk away, so ideal for those who love an ocean swim, or to surf.  The beachside cafes are great for breakfast and the Illawarra region offers a host of activities, including bushwalking, action parks and boardwalks through the rainforest.

Why stay longer?
We loved sitting on the deck and watching the trains go by in the distance.  We aren’t really trainspotters, but found it very relaxing.  A longer stay would give you the chance to explore more of the beaches, including the rock pools.   There are great parks for the kids and the beaches are patrolled.

Why you wouldn’t stay longer?
I can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t want to spend more time in the Kalili Beach House.
