Best pet-friendly holiday accommodation: Jellore Cottage, Berrima, New South Wales

Jellore Cottage is the winner of TakeABreak 2008 National Award for best pet-friendly accommodation and is the perfect pet-friendly destination; a charming self-contained heritage listed 1860s colonial cottage in the idyllic town of Berrima in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The cottage captures the romance of a bygone era while providing all the modern amenities for a comfortable stay for you and your pet.

The town of Berrima was established in 1831 and remains as the only example of an existing and largely preserved Australian Georgian colonial town. Located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River, Berrima is comfortable drive from several major centres (Sydney: 125km, 80min. Canberra: 162km, 100min. Wollongong: 82km, 50min.) The town was originally chosen by Governor Bourke to be the administrative centre of the County of Camden and the town’s old court house (1838), gaol (1839) and Australia’s oldest continuously licensed inn (Surveyor General Inn, 1835) are testimony to its historic past.

Today, Berrima village is delightful combination of living museum and attractive tourist and social centre. There are village squares, lanes, picturesque buildings to admire and art galleries, antique shops, boutiques, cafes and the village markets (second Sunday of every month) to enjoy.

Ideally located in the heart of this enchanting town is Jellore Cottage. The cottage accommodates up to four people and comes with all the little touches sure to make your stay extra special. Your pet is free to run around in the secure backyard, chase toys to their heart’s content and then snuggle up in the supplied pet bed. Meanwhile you can relax in the beautifully decorated bedrooms - one has a double bed, the other two singles and they all have Victorian iron bedsteads and luxurious linen - or have a soak in the magnificent claw-foot bath in the superbly reconstructed bathroom.

Generous breakfast provisions are provided for a full cooked breakfast, which can easily be prepared in the fully equipped kitchen or you can opt for a continental breakfast. You can spend your days and nights snuggled up by the cosy log fire reading one of the books from the small supplied library – which includes DVDs, or relaxing around the BBQ in the lush cottage gardens, the choice is yours. The cottage retains many of its original features, such as the vertical slab walls, hardwood timber floors and pine ceilings and is simply yet delightfully furnished to conjure up the charm of its rich past.

Jellore Cottage remains a delightful reminder of times past, a popular escape for people seeking rest and relaxation in a charming old colonial town while giving you the ability to bring your beloved pet along to experience all the fun. A great place for your next pet-friendly holiday.
