Editor's Choice - Lochinver Homestead and Cottages
  • Cosy bedroom
  • Lochinver Homestead
  • Miner's couch
  • Sugar gums line the driveway

The Victorian goldfields are a treasure trove and we are not just talking about gold.  They are liberally sprinkled with other precious finds, such as Lochinver Homestead, a magnificent 1860s property nestled in 1000 acres of fine farmland in the glorious Carisbrook region, rich in history and things to see and do.

The area abounds with attractions, such as driving through Maldon – the setting for the highly regarded film ‘Romulus, My Father’, visiting Kyriong, a traditional farm with resident emus, and you don’t need to be a trainspotter to marvel at Maryborough Railway Station with its café and antique shops … so much to do, so little time!

Not if you stay at Lochinver – as this historic homestead is a place of peace and relaxation and the perfect setting off point for exploring this wonderful corner of Victoria.  The Homestead has five bedrooms and can sleep up to 14 guests, making it the perfect getaway for a group of friends wanting to live the dream of life in simpler times.  Create your own meals in the country kitchen and serve them in the formal dining room, relax in the lounge room, and with two bathrooms and a powder room, there are plenty of amenities even when the house is at capacity. The Homestead also features an elegant spa room.

However not everyone wants to travel in a group, so if you are looking for a smaller – perhaps more intimate place to stay – Lochinver offers that as well.  Blue Wren Cottage is an old miner’s cottage with three bedrooms that is ideal for families or couples on a weekend away together and Creek Cottage is hidden away in the Homestead gardens and is perfect for a couple. The Homestead and cottages can be booked together or separately and offer the flexibility to cater to all needs.

If you can tear yourself away from the serenity of Lochinver, many more treats await you in the goldfields and beyond.  Learn about the Mt Alexander Goldfields at the Old Castlemaine Market and take the time to sample the fine foods and excellent wines of the region.  You could easily spend a week meandering through the historic and beautiful countryside between Lochinver and Melbourne, but you will always look forward to retreating to the warm and welcoming accommodation that is living history, but with all the comforts of today.

Imagine sitting in front of the roaring log fire with a glass of something special from your day trip to the wineries, and you will be asking yourself not only how long you can stay at Lochinver, but also how quickly you can arrange to come back to this treasure of the goldfields.
