Australia’s favourite winter getaways

Where’s your favourite destination in winter? Heading for the cool of the highlands or north for the heat? We asked you to vote on your favourite winter holiday destination.

TakeABreak.com.au, Australia’s only independent holiday rental website, initiated a first time ‘Best Places to Stay’ award for Australian destinations, which recognised towns and cities that have outstanding facilities in specialist segment categories.

Winners were voted on by the public, with 8 categories presenting finalists across each state.

Here’s why…

“My favourite family holiday was when we took our four boys to Busselton in the winter, we stayed in a cottage and the boys had heaps of open space to run for ages in the grass and see all the animals right in our back yard, they especially loved collecting the chickens eggs in the mornings and cooking them for breakfast.”
“Sailing around the Whitsundays!”

“My favourite holiday experience was when I went with my friend and her family to the Barossa Valley. We toasted marshmallows and bread by the open fire, played charades for hours on end and pretty much just had fun. We slid down the stairs on mattresses and stayed up until early morning telling spooky stories. We slept in, had spa baths and water fights. We walked down to the sheep on a block of land that my friend’s dad owned and I saved their dog from an angry ram! We played hide and seek chases in all the crazy, spooky nooks and cracks around the property. It was the best holiday ever.”

“We had the best time in Cradle Mountain. We stayed in a gorgeous log cabin surrounded by bush and wildlife at the Cradle Mountain Highlanders. It snowed a few days before we got there so it was gorgeous and we actually got a glimpse of the top of Cradle Mountain which is often obscured by low cloud.”
“An overnight stay in Olinda in winter with a trip to Pie in the Sky and fish and chips from the local. A nice weekend romantic getaway with my husband, not too far to drive.”
Mt Hotham has the best skiing and it brought us together as a family by allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the snow and the mountains”

“The great weather of Port Douglas, friendly people and spectacular scenery and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef.

“I love a beach holiday where the weather is fine everyday, with various activities for families. I've had a great time in Byron Bay, as well as the Margaret River region, loved it because of the weather, exploring special interest places, as well as tourist friendly for younger children.”

“ Sun, sipping, scallops, surf, swimming & sand at Perugian Beach in Queensland. Throw in a poolside and a good book for total relaxation.”
“ Just been to Wandiligong, Mystic View Cottage...awesome, paragliding with the Australian Champion, Freg Gungi, winery tours and days in the snow, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham, just a stone’s throw away!! Wow, what more could you want apart from great shopping and wonderful restaurants, all in Bright. We had the best holiday ever and were celebrating our lovely son’s 21st. It was a family affair complete with our two dogs. Mystic View Cottage rates as a five star place to stay and the host Carol Binder is number one with great help and suggestions. It is so cool being able to use TakeABreak to book online in full confidence that it will be a great destination… thanks so much!”
“ The beautiful Mystic View Cottage in Wandiligong. Lovely house…fantastic garden…great location. Great place to take the dogs for a holiday too. We all had a awesome holiday and will be returning.”

About the Author
Penny Parsons is CEO for TakeABreak.com.au Penny loves to travel and it was this that led to the idea of TakeABreak.com.au. With many travellers looking for more than just a standard hotel experience, her objective was to provide them with access to as many different accomodation types as possible.

When searching for boutique accomodation such as B&Bs or holiday homes she also found the only option was calling local real estate agents or accessing local newspapers and information centres. This process was not only time consuming but sometimes yielded no results at all. She felt there needed to be a more comprehensive yet easier, streamlined and convenient search option. So in 2003, with 300 properties, the seed for TakeABreak.com.au was sown.
