Delightful Destination: Adelong, NSW
  • Thredbo
  • Skiing Mt Selwyn
  • Fishing in the Snowy Mountains
The Heritage listed country town of Adelong is nestled along the Adelong River to the northwest of the Snowy Mountains. This pretty 19th century town has an array of historic farmhouses, town buildings and plenty of trees, which change colour in a spectacular fashion in autumn. Ghosts of gold diggers long past would likely be thrilled to see how much of their history has been preserved, offering a mixture of charm and beauty to an area that is frequented by bushwalkers and skiers alike, staying in nearby tourist centres.
Things to do:
Given Adelong is best known for its golden history, you may want to try your hand at fossicking for gold at Richies Gold Battery located at Adelong Falls Reserve.
Walking the streets of Adelong will provide a feel for the charm of the town, which at the peak of its glory had more than 3000 inhabitants, but today has considerably less than half that number. Autumn leaves and spring flowers display the town at her prettiest. For true history buffs, it is possible to arrange history tours of the Adelong Museum.
Nearby towns offer plenty of character and charm and it is well worth taking a few days to drive around the region, checking out antique stores and galleries, and relaxing with wine and country cooking at the cafes and restaurants.
Naturally, many who flock to the area will be enticed by the ski hills or wildflowers, depending on the time of the year. The Snowy Mountains are a region of incredible beauty and any person, young or old, will be drawn back again and again.
When to go:
The Snowy Mountains offer magic year-round, and the ideal time for you to go will depend on your interests. Winter snow brings skiers from across the globe, anxious to try slopes in the southern hemisphere while the northern part of the world basks in snow-melting sunshine. Summer entices campers and horse-riders to explore the beauty of the region while spring and autumn lure photographers and nature-lovers who want to experience the brilliant colours of flowers or leaves. Whenever you choose to go, you will be treated to an array of natural wonders. Adelong is a delightful side-trip for any holiday in this region.
How to get there:
A car is the best way to travel to Adelong, as the town itself is fairly small and remote, limiting other methods of transportation. However, with its position by the Snowy Mountains, it is an ideal place to explore during day trips from your nearby skiing and bushwalking adventures. Adelong is located nearly half-way between Sydney and Melbourne, and only a short drive from Wagga Wagga.
There are plenty of amazing places to stay in the Snowy Mountains. Whether you are after a private chalet, a luxurious hotel, or a charming bed and breakfast, there are countless options from which to choose. For example, The Blue Gum Cottage has received rave reviews from Takeabreak.com.au visitors. It could be thanks to the stunning river and valley views, or it may be the luxurious facilities of this two-bedroom fully self-contained cottage. Possibly, the friendly farm animals are a favourite with the younger guests who enjoy feeding them, while the couples who visit prefer the tranquillity of this private cottage. One thing is certain, however - there are many luxurious, charming, and unique accommodation options throughout the entire Snowy Mountain region.
Ideal length of visit:
There are many people in the Snowy Mountains who have enjoyed their holidays so much that they resigned from their jobs in the real world to take up local positions. This is perfectly understandable, as it is very difficult to leave. You’ll definitely want to allow at least a weekend, but a week or longer would make a very enjoyable break.
Further information:
The closest Visitors Centre for the area is at 5 Adelong Road in nearby Tumut, where you can find pamphlets, maps and information about tours in the region.
