Bellthorpe Cottage
  • Nestled in the hills is Bellthorpe Cottage
  • Watch colourful birds, like the Wompoo
  • Enjoy the beautiful waterfalls
  • Wander the great walking tracks
  • Marvel at the rainforest

Bellthorpe Cottage is located on 120 peaceful acres just over an hour from Brisbane, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The property sits in its own valley, with its own spring-fed creek, its own rainforest and there are virtually no neighbours. There are the walking tracks that go through the paddocks, through the rainforest to the waterfalls. You can hear the quiet country hush - especially on star-filled nights.

The one bedroom timber cottage is a great place to get away from it all and take in the relaxing atmosphere. The self-contained cottage has wide verandahs, a well-equipped kitchen, queen-size bed, wood heater and is eco-based to minimise the impact on the environment. Check out the wild life and amazing variety of birds, discover the rainforest, take in the sounds of nature, rest at the waterfalls, nestle in front of the fire, catch the cool mountain breezes, take a walk around and explore, tour the district or just sit back and relax... but whatever you do, you'll enjoy the surroundings. The farm is now a hideaway retreat, well away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

There are at least five different habitats for wildlife here: rainforest, wet sclerophyll, open paddocks, riparian and wet land, and man-made around the buildings. Each of these have their own set of parameters influencing what species inhabits them, and there is a great variety: from the birds of paradise, bower birds and pitta birds in the rainforest; to more commonly found parrots, kookaburras, magpies and currawongs in the open areas. All the tracks and facilities on the property have been designed to minimise the impact on the natural surroundings.

As there is only the one cottage on the property, you'll have the place to yourself - makes for great bird watching, photography, bush walking and relaxing. There are plenty of features to look at and study throughout the property. The standouts are the waterfalls, all north-facing in sheltered positions, and they make a great place to spend time. Mind you, the rainforest and creek are equally attractive - palm groves, strangler figs, cedar, giant eucalypts, orchids, epiphytes and many more.

Historically, the property was rich in timbers, many of which still grow here today. Cleared areas were used for grazing. Today, much of what had been previously cleared is being regenerated back to rainforest and wildlife is actively encouraged on the property. Over half of the property is established rainforest with waterfalls feed by a spring creek, and adjoins a national park. In fact many guests have likened Bellthorpe Cottage to be their own private national park.

All this and you are only just over an hour from Brisbane. At Bellthorpe Cottage you could be a million miles away from the rest of the world - and that’s why guests come here!

Bellthorpe Cottage is proud to be shortlisted in the 2010 TakeABreak Awards. Check out Bellthorpe Cottage on takeabreak.com.au
